The other girl that said "as long as you do it for yourself, then that's a noble cause," that's the exact opposite of enoch magazine. So then the definition of enoch magazine could be: "always serve others cause only God is noble."

Carter .... JB stands for Joey Basta from Long Island NY.

I know what your saying and it is great to be honest. I think showing this video is OK in the sense that we are showing unbelievers that we (Christians) are people who have struggles just like anyone else because I find it that when an unbeliever see's a Christian do something considered "unChristian" they say .... And you call yourself a christian!

And they need to realize that we have things we fight with also. We are not perfect because unbelievers think that we are supposed to be perfect .... and we are not and this video shows that.

BUT we still need to be an example are very careful in what we do in front of unbelievers. Believe me Carter, I am talking to myself, NOT pointing any fingers. I Love what you guys do and am stand with you in the work you are doing for our lord and savior Jesus Christ!

Love you guys, keep up the great work !!!

JB, you are absolutely right...this video is kinda sketchy. But our rag tag crew is not your average "Christian" group. I think your comment is well respected and well written (not too judgmental). In fact, you can hear me saying "we can't run this," in the video...remember? But I think it's more important to be honest in everything we do instead of editing out certain things for fear for the Christian Right. I'm not even sure the Christian Right exists anymore (with any real power). But we all know that "Christians" tend to hide certain things that they do, even though they personally think it's ok: like drinking and fireworks. So I would have felt guilty, had I not run the footage...if that makes any sense.
But thanks for balancing out this video with your comment. Our site is dedicated to bringing out discussions just like this one we are having! And our footage is always edited for both the "Christian" and non-christian crowd. Hit me back...

Dude, If you want to have a beer or two here and there, that's OK BUT, you shouldn't of put it on this website. He also seemed to be slurring his words at the end of the video. To me he seemed drunk. The Bible says you shouldn't have any appearance of evil.

I'm not trying to be a party pooper but we as Christians really need to watch what we do. Unbelievers are just waiting to point the finger and say .... "see, see, look at that guy, he was drinking beer." There are so many who already believe that Christians are Hippocrates and we need to watch ourselves.

Carter,

I miss you, man! The wedding was stellar. Trying to get adjusted to the whole married thang is pretty hard...a lot tougher than both of us expected. Anywho, just wanted to holler at you.

No hard feelings!

One love in Christ,

Paul Gentilini

ps. I still want to get up with you and make some music.

The door was open just a crack, so I pushed it slightly and crept into the room. Thank God it was oiled recently, I thought to myself. I hate when a good sneak is ruined by a squeaky hinge. My thoughts recollected themselves as I found him attempting to aim the mouth of a gun at his head. I would have protested the action a half-minute sooner, but I was taken aback by the awkwardness of his struggle to reach the trigger of his long-barreled shotgun whilst keeping it aimed at his face. I watched as he reached around with both hands, while positioning the gun with his feet, and failed to get control of the heavy weapon. "I'll have to pull this damn trigger with my pinky toe," he said taking off his shoes. He took off one shoe and held it for a moment with a depressed chuckle; "Might as well throw it out the window. I won't be here to fix the mess, and then they'll have to bury me with better shoes than these." He gave the shoe a forceful throw in the direction of the window and watched it bounce off with not even a fracture in the glass.

"Save the shoe-chucking and suicides to the professionals, Conrad. Stick to what you do best - writing awesome CD reviews."

"My name isn't Conrad," he said raising the gun to the doorframe I was standing in.

I stepped back for a moment and raised my hands in front of me. "Listen, Conrad... Carter... Edward... Whatever your name is - you need to seriously reconsider what you're about to do."

"What's that - shooting you?"

"No, shooting yourself. Well, yeah, shooting me too. That would equally suck. But listen, it's not worth it to put a bullet in your face just because you need my CD review so badly. Seriously, man, what you did was great. It was unorthodox, but great in an unorthodox way. The hataz be all hatin cuz you playin by ya own roolz. It be all wack in tha internizzles wit ma homedawg demonstratin tha powahz ah hiz imaginatin gettin messijiz ov angah from tha masses porrin they opinions on tha site like lemon juice on a open wound."

"Joel, when did you become gangster?"

"Sorry, I do it because I can. What I'm trying to say is, don't let it get you down. You're just... groundbreaking. Unique. Special. Doin ya own thang."

"You really think so?"

"I just really don't want you to kill yourself."

He got up from his black leather lazy boy recliner and reached for his wallet in the back pocket of his blue levi jeans. There were a few small holes in the knees, but the kind you get from hard work, not from the mall. His pants were held up by a glossy black leather belt that reflected the pink light of the Gibson neon guitar clock hanging on the wall. Anyone who spends more than $20 on a belt must be crazy, I thought to myself. I mean, really, who is going to notice? Especially in a country where half the population has enough belly to hide the presence of a belt or lack of. In the same instant, I decided that my feelings on pointless spending applied to socks and underwear as well. I backed up another step as he began to walk toward me. He pulled out his wallet and opened it up. Inside, to my surprise there was... a tiny man juggling machetes. "He lives in my wallet. He showed up one day and I thought it was cool at first, but I mean, every time I go to grab some cash I end up bleeding for about half an hour. They're just tiny cuts but they hurt like the dickens." I wondered for a moment, how the dickens hurt. I couldn't ever remember hurting my dickens, but then I didn't quite know what a dickens was. Wait. Tiny man. Wallet. Machetes. Right, I was in the middle of a conversation still. I looked up and realized he had been talking to me for the last five minutes while I had been thinking about dickens. I had no idea where he was in the conversation, so I just began nodding my head and making a "I sincerely care" face. After another half an hour he finally stopped talking. And then he pushed me down the stairs. I got a small fracture in my skull, but fortunately there were no side-effects, except that every now and then I involuntarily kick people in the shins as hard as I can - involuntarily. Try explaining that to a 300 lb. bouncer outside a club you're having difficulty entering. He didn't believe it was involuntary, to say the least, and that was when I got my arms ripped off. Looking back, I probably shouldn't have followed Edward home from the bar. But at least I've learned from my mistakes.

He showed up one day and I thought it was cool at first, but I mean, every time I go to grab some cash I end up bleeding for about half an hour. They’re just tiny cuts but they hurt like the dickens.” I wondered for a moment, how the dickens hurt. I couldn’t ever remember hurting my dickens, but then I didn’t quite know what a dickens was. Wait. Tiny man. Wallet. Machetes. Right, I was in the middle of a conversation still. I looked up and realized he had been talking to me for the last five minutes while I had been thinking about dickens. I had no idea where he was in the conversation, so I just began nodding my head and making a “I sincerely care” face. After another half an hour he finally stopped talking. And then he pushed me down the stairs. I got a small fracture in my skull, but fortunately there were no side-effects, except that every now and then I involuntarily kick people in the shins as hard as I can - involuntarily. Try explaining that to a 300 lb. bouncer outside a club you’re having difficulty entering. He didn’t believe it was involuntary, to say the least, and that was when I got my arms ripped off. Looking back, I probably shouldn’t have followed Edward home from the bar. But at least I’ve learned from my mistakes.

Ok, so I listened to the new cd by Joel Dobbins called Unreal...It was really cool. Joel is a talented singer/songwriter. Also, the sky is blue and fish swim in water. I'm Edward Applebee, NOT YOU. I do all the big reviews for real labels in LA and NY. I need this review like I need a shotgun blast to the FACE!

Clearly, this writer is a drunk.
Or crazy.
...or both.

This may have been a nice story, but, when it's not a true story, it bases his career on a lie.
Let's think of other creative, real ways to get his music listened to, hmm?

How many cds reviews have been terrible ... many. Its often a cd review is so bad that it makes me not want to buy the cd. This cd review made me actually go to myspace and listen to the songs. As i listened i wondered which place in Vegas would I be able to hear this Joel Dobbins at. I think creative writing should be implemented in all writings. As once prescribed by the great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson lets take some Gonzo and live with it.

It was a dark and stormy night. This girl named MAUREEN heard a knock at the door. “Who could it be?” After all those years being secluded in a spooky house, she had become a bit jumpy. She held her cat Mr. Stubbs close in her arms. He’ll protect her!
KA-BOOM! A large clap of thunder shook the room. The knocking continued. MAUREEN was not in high school anymore. She still maintained some of those relationships, but she had moved on. Her world had expanded and as well as her taste in music.
BANG BANG BANG. The knocking was now louder and more aggressive. Mr. Stubbs jumped out of MAUREEN’S arms and ran out of the room. “Stubbs, wait,” she cried! But Mr. Stubbs knew better. Whatever was at that door had alerted his animal instincts. MAUREEN stared at Mr. Stubbs’ escape rout for a moment, contemplating it’s success.
“No,” she said. She hadn’t burdened those many years of pain and isolation to be scared by a knock at the door. The rain began to pour immensely. MAUREEN immediately walked to the door and unlocked the bolt. She could barely hear the sounds of the deadbolt opening, as the rain added a heavy weight to the acoustics of the scary house.
She didn’t care anymore. Her life was her own an she now knew this. As she opened the door, a gust of wind blew in her face, blinding her view. Wiping the mist from her face she saw the darkened figure in her presence. It was him.

I thought that this was supposed to be a CD review, not a high school creative writing assignment. You are doing a seriously talented artist a great disservice by not actually talking about his music. Or a real gig. Or the real guy. For shame.

Some little-known facts about Joel Dobbins that make this interview all the more humorous:

I've never visited an area with a desert-like climate
I've never driven a truck, or any kind of Toyota for that matter
I've never driven a rental
I've never met Carter/Edward Applebee
I've never performed at a bar
If I've ever worn a blazer, it has never been with the collar popped or the sleeves rolled
I've never played "Hypocrite" live

Other than that, the story is pretty much accurate... except that I'm not quite as outgoing as the story suggests.

Carter, two things:
1) Whatever you've got in your wallet, man, get rid of it. It seems to be causing you way too much stress.
2) Thanks for the review which almost doubles as fan fiction, which is actually pretty cool when you think about it.

Wow. I am truly blessed by the work you are doing for Our Father, Our Lord, Our Savior. To see you acting what the Lord has placed upon my heart is beyond inspiring, beyond motivating, beyond encouraging. I am moved. So many people are lost, hurting, abandoned, forgotten, tossed aside and thrown away. My heart hurts for anyone that is suffering from unbelief or no belief. I want to help you in any way that I can. I know that Our Father is with you every step of the way. Be encouraged. You have chosen a path that is going to make a difference for the Kingdom of Heaven. Lives will be changed and souls will be saved.

I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to arise in the morning and know you are doing the exact will of God for your life. I am truly amazed. Thank you for your sacrifice of service.

I will tell everyone that I know about you and direct them all to your site. I don't make a lot of money but I believe God has brought us together for a reason. I want to be a part of what you are doing. I don't want to be on the side lines any more.

I can help with fundraising.

good tips on Vegas joints. been to Vegas about 15 times and have never eaten at Roberto's Taco Shop. trust me, i'll have to try it out New Year's. and yes, the Bellagio buffet is the best, but then again, anything Italian is generally "the best."

Hi Brandon... Beware, The Raise of The Black Sails....The Change Of The Seasons.... When Beauty of Light and the Suns Fiery Energy Begins to Fade... The Grey's are "Not" Welcoming !.... Seems We live more in the Dark then in the Light... The Cooler Climate Change, The Change from Blue To Grey..... Seems like an Eternity ! Though Winter has not arrived as of yet.... If U are a sky-gazer like myself, I watch the Sun Moving further & further away & Daylight time shorter.....The Nights are ssoooooo Loooooonng ! The Change is already apparent..... And in, Comes the Rolling of The Thorns.... Pronounced Diminishment Of The Suns Light... .... And As You Describe... The Limited Sunlite can Evoke In Some A Very Real & Strong Change In Moods, That Lead to Debilitating Depression, S.A.D (SEASONAL-AFFECTIVE-DISORDER) ... For I Suffer the Same..... But Brandon, Somehow Approaches Suffering Into Inspiration for Others, And It Seems Beneficial to Him as Well, by Using His Writing as an Outlet of His Emotional Intelligence & His Compassion For Life..... How He Succeeds at this, I do Not Know...

Thank You, Brandon, My Friend.....

I'm with Wonderful Mercy Church in Gilbert Arizona. We do street ministry a couple times a month which is not enough, but we are learning. I watched your skid row documentary and I was so encouraged to keep pressing into this work for the Lord. Being doers of the word is where it is at. I pray great blessing over all of you. You were all looking so much like Jesus on the video. Hummm pretty cool.

    Blessings,

I think all of Blink 182's albums were great. You have to respect the early Blink182 to be able to enjoy the newer cds.Thats terrible you couldnt even finish the cd. what if the rest of the tracks were great. I think capitol lights have a solid sound and the cd is enjoyable.

OK so 2 things:
First, I'm really happy you are writing for us right now, Brandon, we need more like you who can see this vision! But just know that you making a comment about Blink 182 has now offended Nate, so be ready for a (friendly) conversation about that.....I think he disagreed with this whole review....

Second, I went to Capital's sight, and listened to their music...i actually liked the "outrage" song....but I probably wouldn't have even bothered had you not given them a bad review....so "fair play!"

This is true. There are many false people out there who will do everything in their power to make you believe that you are the hypocrite or the bad person . We are called to serve each other in different capacities. But it will always be a battle for your mind when you are doing right and you are doing what is right and you are truly the servant that is serving and doing good..

Andy proves that when we tell the truth and, we truly want to help by telling the truth, that it is a struggle, it will make others uncomfortable , but in the end , when one has gone through the emotional hell others will throw at you then and only then can the truth set you free and bring freedom to the captives. The patient dumping issue was a case in point. No non profit wants to ever admit they can't help everyone, yet only one non-profit led the way to address that issue and it was ANDY , then the other Missions followed suit. And it was interesting to see how God blessed ANdy and the Union Rescue Mission with avenues to address that problem and bring to light that issue of hospitals dumping people in skid row, the sick and the weak to die. And instead of losing funding because they publicly admitted they were not a hospital , they got more exposure and probably more people to use their resources to help. Come one Andy came out in a movie.

It is because of Andy I am about to head back to church. I can see that there are CEOS of these Missions that truly do outreach instead of staying behind the big fortress like walls at those missions. It is tough to have a mental illness living in skid row because many times we are abused spiritually and we are told that we don't need our medication by these preachers and we only need God. I can attest that God provides many ways to help all of us through medicine. We are told we have chronic illnesses because God is punishing us, that we have diabetes, medical problems , mental illness, I have an autoimmune illness destroying the myelin sheath around my nerves , ever so slowly , and I am a veteran of the first gulf war and deal wit PTSD. But these preachers here accuse us and tell us we are weak and that we don''t need medicine we need God. I need both. SO it is difficult to even want to step into a church for me.

When I think of Andy Bales these are the words from Isaiah I think about.

He shall feed His flock like a shepherd,
and He shall gather the lambs with His arm, with His arm,
He shall feed His flock like a shepherd,
and He shall gather the lambs with his arm, with His arm;

and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those that are with young,
and gently lead, and gently those that are with young.

Come unto Him all ye that labour, come unto Him that are heavy laden,
and He will give you rest,

come unto Him all ye that labour, come unto Him that are heavy laden,
and He will give you rest.

Take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,
for He is meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest,
and ye shall find rest unto your souls,

take His yoke upon you, and learn of Him,
for He is meek and lowly of heart, and He shall find rest,
and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Carter & Nate + crew! You guys got something here! What better way to raise awareness of a place in need than to release a great documentary film about it. Go after it! It's got the chops to find a big audience.

Looking forward to hanging out with you guys again.

Good job putting GOD ON DISPLAY for the world to see! I'm proud of all of you and look forward to learning about Skid Row when the DVD is released. More than that, I'm so excited to get a copy of this film and show it to young adults and hopefully motivate all of us to get out of the pew and "Just Do It" when it comes to living our faith. God bless all of you!

The quote from the pastor at the beginning is a real hook!
"They come here to die" -nice job editing it together into a compelling piece.
Maybe a little less of the goofball lemon slicing, but then again looked like you guys were getting slap happy after a while.

Dear Enoch Magazine,
The other day I received a link to your magazine. I saw your documenty on "Skid Row is Holyground," and thought it was amizing. It is an outstanding piece of work! After I viewed this piece, I read the article Brandan Ryan, "Pain on the brain. That too, touch a cord in my heart.

As a disabled woman, who won the first Civil Rights Case, in the state of California, and has advocated for herself and others for well over 35 years now, I would like to propose an offer to you. I am a writer, fitness instrutor, and advocate. I was so moved by what I read and saw on your magazine; that I would be honored if I could be a contributor to the true causes that are happening in our world today. Moreover, I thought of how my conterversial story, if made into a documentry would help others. I have spent a long time trying to cave out a place for myself in society, and my story is other people's story.

I have written and published a fictionalized autobiogrphy, write for Audacity Magazine, and have my own blog on my website. I truly believe that together we can make a strong impact on your readers and change the world.

You are more than welcomed to look at my website for more details. I look forward to your reply and hearing from you,

God Bless and all you are doing for others,

Most Sincerely,
Karen Lynn

As for the article on big ministries I kinda got a little disturbed by the article. There are several big ministries out there that started out with humble beginnings. Raul Reis with somebody loves you was the son of imigrants and a vietnam vet, Greg Laurie with Harvest was the son of an alcoholic who was married and divorced several times (Watch Lost Boy its amazing). Steve Mays of CC south bay was found laying in the gutter when he first was taken to church. Keep in mind that all of these ministries now have over 15000 members qualifying them as mega churches. I would suggst to dig deeper and not group into one general blanket statement and you may be surprised at what you find. The reality is that people see tele-evangelist as the only megas but the reality is that there are many large ministries with very humble beginnings who many times get overlooked.

Thank you
Edwin

I think overall you have a great site. Things that could be better since you are small and open minded is allow people to comment on articles. The big ministry one is a great example. It posted yesterday and comments are closed. It's actually a pointless article. I consult to many of the big ministries, and most of the leadership have had more hardship growing up than you and I combined. Focus is a great example. I know at least 2-4 in Sr VP or higher roles at Focus that grew up as little kids on their own (like they saw parents killed, they were kicked out at 9 years old of their home, were forced into trafficking type things) so its interesting to read things like this. Most people don't walk around with badges saying hey I had a life that sucked worse than you. Focus is one example, Cruz Ministries, World Vision, Compassion, I could go on. There is a lot of amazing stories out there in the ministry leadership and where they ended up. Most of the ones I know went from orphan to corporate big wigs in fortune 10 companies then took 8-9 figure cuts to help run the ministry they are at. I think if people are going to post things like that they should use examples. I am not being defensive, just saying its like saying the government sucks but having no backing for the basis. It's interesting topic and I am sure you can find examples but its the meat that seems missing. Then what's the point of it, there isn't any directional change in the article. It seems more like someone that had a bad experience and lumps the church and ministries of the world into her one experience. Just my thoughts, its why a board/social network would be great for you to see where your readers are on thoughts and have engaging conversations about it.

Love, Light, and Melody is an amazing organization. I was with them for a week in March 2008. It was an extremly heavy experience. The mural we painted was a huge undertaking. especially since it was 70 x 20 feet (not the 12x12 as stated). I look forward to visiting Nicaragua again and helping others in need there. It is amazing feeling to share your talent and love with others.

whoa whoa...I love dada art...All the shapes mixed with letters and then the black red and off-white colors...!
Well, maybe I should be more specific and say I love "dada print." the rest of the movement can be pretty fruity.
Email me more and we'll talk....cause Eric once told me that he would fly anywhere to do another show like the one he started, (and I love making people keep their word).
